"Nous allons directement vers la mort...": Les producteurs de Diogo, Darou Fall et Fass Boye craignent un drame dans les Niayes
"We are heading directly towards the definitive death of small farmers and this must not be the case, because a country cannot develop without farmers." This heartfelt cry comes from market gardeners in Diogo, Darou Fall and Fass Boye, among other localities in the Niayes area, who denounce the "carelessness and indifference" of the authorities in the face of the poor sales of horticultural products.
"We have harvested but are struggling to sell our products, many are forced to sell at a loss, and the consequence is that all those who were interested in agriculture are now losing interest in the profession and, as a result, risk taking the perilous paths of illegal immigration, or engaging in aggression or something else, which is not in the interest of the country," the farmers complained during a press briefing held in Diogo.
For this reason, they are calling on the government to "suspend the sale of agribusiness products on the market." They argue that "it's not just a matter of freezing sales; there needs to be follow-up, because while small producers are facing a freeze, agribusinesses are flooding the market with their products."
He continued: "We understand that the intention is to remove small farmers from the market to force them to permanently abandon potato production, which poses a real danger to the country. This is why we are asking the State to ensure that the agencies that regulate production and marketing can impose a freeze on potato supplies from agribusinesses, because they have their cold storage facilities and the means to preserve their stocks."
The community in the Niayes region is only asking for a few months to sell its produce. However, the farmers say they have "observed, just as the harvests of small producers are reaching the market, the presence of agribusinesses that are also flooding the area with their products." They are asking the government to "address this issue," but also to provide the agricultural sector with tools and infrastructure, such as markets and cold storage facilities, so that it can preserve its produce after harvesting.
