[Portrait] Mame Mor Diarra : Grand frère, maître, disciple, ‘’chambre secrète et mystique’’ de Serigne Touba
In the depths of Mouridism's spiritual history, certain figures remain discreet, almost secret, but fundamental. Mame Mor Diarra Mbacké, also known as Mame Borom Saam, is one of them. The elder brother of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, he is a light in the shadows, a silent witness and actor in the birth of one of the greatest religious movements in West Africa.
Born Mouhamad Mbacké in 1850, Mame Mor Diarra was born in Mbacké Baol, son of Serigne Mor Anta Saly Mbacké and Sokhna Diarra Bousso, mother of the founder of Mouridism. He shares both paternal and maternal ancestry with Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, alongside their brothers and sisters, notably Serigne Habibou and Sokhna Faty Mbacké.
From a very young age, Mame Mor Diarra was immersed in the world of Quranic knowledge. After initial studies in the family courtyard, he was entrusted to Serigne Boussobé, his uncle, to continue his rigorous training.
He was one of the first teachers of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, to whom he taught the basics of religious knowledge. But the spiritual greatness of Serigne Touba, his inner light, were such that Mame Mor Diarra then chose, with rare humility, to become his disciple.
This reversal of roles is not a breakup but a profound sign of spiritual recognition. He was also the first person Serigne Touba informed by letter of his divine mission, well before the public announcement of the founding of Mouridism. This intimate and spiritual bond gives depth to the relationship between the two brothers.
In these writings Serigne Touba considers Mame Borom Saam as his “secret room”, a place both symbolic and mystical.
Mame Mor Diarra, discreet in history, but immense in spiritual reality, is the reflection of an essential dimension of Mouridism: loyalty, discretion, transmission.
Today, the legacy of this great man is perpetuated by his descendants, notably by Moukhtar Mbacké, president of the scientific commission of the grandsons of Mame Mor Diarra Mbacké, a structure responsible for preserving and transmitting the history, writings and spirituality of this brother of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
