Le récit poignant du Pr. Diomaye : «Comment le cancer a emporté mon frère… »
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye shared some profound insights into the ravages of cancer in his entourage. During an awareness day held at the Palace by the General Secretariat of the Presidency, he recounted the story of his sister and brother, all affected by this disease.
"My sister called me one day to tell me that during the early screening activities of the Senegalese League Against Cancer (Lisca), she had been diagnosed with pre-cancerous lesions. She told me that she was referred to a clinic for treatment," said the head of state.
And to help his sister, he brought her to Dakar. "I accompanied her until she kept all her appointments." Now that his eldest sister is cured, the head of state expressed his gratitude to Lisca.
"Today, I tell myself that what Lisca did for my sister, my responsibility is to do the same for other women who are sisters, mothers, wives," explains President Diomaye.
And so, he says, he organized a screening activity. At the end of it, 13 women had, like his sister, precancerous lesions. "I took them into care with a clinic in Mbour, I followed up with their appointments until they were cured," he says.
While his sister was spared, his brother will not be so lucky. "Along the way, my own older brother was diagnosed. He had cancer. I brought him home, he was treated for a year. Then, he thought he was cured, he wanted to go home. One day, while waiting for his appointment, I was told he was coughing. He was suffering," says the head of state.
His patient was then taken back to Dakar to continue his treatment. "Unfortunately, the cancer had recurred and even metastasized. I took him to the Ouakam cancer center for his radiotherapy sessions. Sadly, he died at my home, in my hands, on October 14, 2022," he confided.
