Thiaroye sous l'eau : Les chevaux remplacent les voitures
The heavy rains that have fallen on Dakar in recent weeks have transformed the streets of Thiaroye Sam Sam into veritable puddles, making the roads virtually impassable. The vast expanses of stagnant water have paralyzed traffic, forcing illegal taxis to abandon the narrow, flooded streets for fear of ending up in the garage. (Report)
In Thiaroye Sam Sam, specifically in the Fallou Warga neighborhood, the roads are flooded, forcing cars to give way. To get around, residents turn to horse-drawn carts. Here, only horses still dare to brave the deep puddles and uneven paths. What was once considered a marginal form of transportation has become a lifeline in a disrupted daily life.
When the crisis benefits the carters
As the saying goes, "one man's misfortune is another man's gain." While locals suffer, carters are doing well. Their daily income, once 4,000 to 5,000 CFA francs, has risen to 12,000 or even 15,000 CFA francs, as demand is soaring. However, they are demanding adequate parking space, believing that their role is being minimized even though they provide a vital service, especially in times of crisis.
A recurring problem, solutions expected
Each rainy season brings its share of distress to Thiaroye Sam Sam, exposing the glaring inadequacies in urban infrastructure and water drainage. A situation that, despite cries of alarm, struggles to find a lasting solution. Residents are once again calling on the state for concrete solutions. In the meantime, carts remain the only recourse for an entire population, caught between stagnant water and institutional neglect.
