Here, only horses still dare to brave the deep puddles and uneven paths. What was once considered a marginal form of transportation has become a lifeline in a disrupted daily life.
When the crisis benefits the carters
As the saying goes, "one man's misfortune is another man's gain." While locals suffer, carters are doing well. Their daily income, once 4,000 to 5,000 CFA francs, has risen to 12,000 or even 15,000 CFA francs, as demand is soaring. However, they are demanding adequate parking space, believing that their role is being minimized even though they provide a vital service, especially in times of crisis.
A recurring problem, solutions expected
Each rainy season brings its share of distress to Thiaroye Sam Sam, exposing the glaring inadequacies in urban infrastructure and water drainage. A situation that, despite cries of alarm, struggles to find a lasting solution. Residents are once again calling on the state for concrete solutions. In the meantime, carts remain the only recourse for an entire population, caught between stagnant water and institutional neglect.
