The National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS) officially launched the stormwater drainage works in the city of Tivaouane on Monday, November 10th. The event, held in the Keur Khaly district, was presided over by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye.
Minister Dièye stated that this project fulfills a promise made by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and reiterated by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. This program, which aligns with ONAS's strategic actions, aims to equip Tivaouane with a modern stormwater drainage and treatment system to sustainably resolve flooding problems.
“On the instructions of the highest authorities, we are launching today the works in about ten districts of Tivaouane. This is a large-scale project of 7.5 billion CFA francs which will directly impact more than 86,000 citizens,” said Cheikh Tidiane Dièye.
The works, which are expected to last eight months, involve the construction of 13.4 kilometers of reinforced concrete canals and the installation of 210 grated manholes and related equipment in the neighborhoods.
These developments will allow for the capture and drainage of water towards natural areas that will be rehabilitated into retention basins. The Minister indicated that this water can then be used for various purposes, including agriculture and even aquaculture.
The contract was awarded to the company KELIMANE ENTREPRISE SA, under the supervision of ONAS.
Cheikh Tidiane Dièye announced the establishment of a monitoring committee chaired by the Prefect of Tivaouane. This committee will bring together all stakeholders: state structures, the town hall, the departmental council, members of parliament, neighborhood representatives, and community actors.
The Minister urged the company to act diligently and efficiently, and above all to prioritize the employment of young people from Tivaouane. He also asked ONAS to ensure close and ongoing monitoring so that the project is completed before the next rainy season.
The representative of the Caliph General of the Tijaniyya order, El Hadji Malick Sarr, welcomed the realization of this project, a long-standing "major concern" for the local population. The Departmental Council and the town hall also reaffirmed their commitment to actively participate in the monitoring committee.

Merci
Merci jub jubal jubanti dîna bakh inchalah
