Universités, Hôpitaux, Rail : Le gouvernement sort l'artillerie lourde pour ses grands chantiers
As deadlines approach, the government is picking up the pace. Speaking to the press, the Minister of Infrastructure, Déthié Fall, provided a comprehensive overview of the ongoing projects, emphasizing the importance of meeting commitments. With the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) on the horizon, the signs are reassuring. The Iba Mar Diop Stadium is "99% complete," the Olympic swimming pool "98% complete," while the Olympic villages are 90% finished. "The handovers are scheduled for May," the minister affirmed, determined to avoid any delays on these strategic infrastructure projects.
On the airport front, the target date is clear: April 30th. Ziguinchor airport is scheduled to reopen on that date. "The commitments made to the Head of State will be honored," insists Déthié Fall. The technical tests, conducted by a calibration aircraft, have been deemed conclusive. Meanwhile, discussions are continuing to finalize the rehabilitation of secondary airports, notably in Saint-Louis, Matam, and Ourossogui. Rail is also progressing: the Regional Express Train (TER) "is almost at the airport," a sign of major progress in connecting transport infrastructure. As for the Dakar-Tambacounda railway project, it is undergoing reorganization, with a refocused governance structure to refine the proposals.
In the university sector, the ambition is equally evident. A vast program, structured in five phases, is now complete. It encompasses the rehabilitation of buildings at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) and the construction of educational infrastructure at Gaston Berger University (UGB), as well as the universities of Bambey, Ziguinchor, Amadou Mahtar Mbow University, and the Virtual University of Senegal. The launch is announced "from Bambey." Furthermore, the universities of Tambacounda and Matam are expected to be completed in October. In the health sector, the government is announcing a change of scale: from an initial plan of 35 health centers, the objective has now been increased to 100, with the construction of two new hospitals.
