Ziguinchor : Il faut sauver le marché Saint-Maur-des-Fossés !

The unsanitary conditions at the Saint-Maur-des-Fossés market in Ziguinchor are causing concern. Shopkeepers, local residents, users, and members of civil society are denouncing the deterioration of this largest commercial center in Ziguinchor.

"The market has become a cumbersome space with the unsanitary conditions that reign there. We are asking the State and the Head of State to take into account this market, which must be an exceptional place of commerce, a development market," pleaded Serigne Omar Fédior, manager of the shopping center located in Boucotte, for whom "the market can no longer accommodate the region's traders."

And to make matters worse, "there is a serious lack of sanitation at the market. Wastewater comes out of the gutters and flows into the road. Residents walk in the wastewater, which can cause illness. The air is unbreathable," warns Serigne Omar Fédior.

Djibril Ndiaye, a member of the Boucotte-Est Neighborhood Council, deplores this situation at the Saint Maur market. "For decades, wastewater has overflowed from the market and invaded the road leading to the airport, crisscrossing houses and even entering compounds. This can lead to contagious diseases."

Sheikh Al Makhtoum Sy, the FRAPP/Ziguinchor coordinator, calls on the municipality. For him, "managing a market is not limited to collecting daily municipal taxes. Managing a market means implementing sanitation. Because the Boucotte market in Ziguinchor is a sub-regional market. You are no doubt aware that beyond the municipality of Ziguinchor, some residents of the region, Gambia, and Guinea come here to stock up. Therefore, this market is not just a municipal market," according to Mr. Sy.

Opportunity making the thief, civil society advocated for the Tilène market, inaugurated on October 13, to truly begin its commercial activities to relieve congestion at Boucotte. "The town hall must be able to live up to our expectations a little more. We cannot claim market management. We know there are problems, particularly with the structure responsible for operating this market. But by emphasizing the human element in the management of this Tilène market, we must be able to overcome this misunderstanding," stressed Sheikh Al Makhtoum Sy.
