DAKAR, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Senegal has decided to hold presidential and parliamentary elections both on Feb. 25, 2007, President Abdoulaye Wade announced on Thursday night.

Parliamentary elections had been originally set for May 2006, but Wade decided last August to hold it together with the presidential vote in order to save money.

In a government communique on Thursday, Wade said holding the elections at the same time could save Senegal 700 million CFA Francs (about 13 million U.S. dollars), which can be used to help people victimized by floods last summer.

The Coalition for An Alternative Popularity (CAP), an opposition alliance of some 20 parties, has recently rejected the idea of holding both polls together and insisted on separating elections and electoral organizations.

They said President Wade's move was to buy time to put his ruling party of Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) in order so as to maintain its majority in the national assembly. Enditem
