  ZIGUINCHOR, 5 Dec 2006 (IRIN) - One person was dead on Tuesday following an armed attack on vehicles in the southern Casamance region just over two weeks after President Abdoulaye Wade asked local elders to help end the rebellion. About 20 men on Monday night ambushed five vehicles on a road 80 km north of the regional capital, Ziguinchor, and robbed the occupants, hospital sources said. One of the passengers died and five others were injured. Two people sustained gunshot wounds in another attack on a car near the village of Manpalago, 60 km north of Ziguinchor, one of the passengers told IRIN.

  DAKAR, 7 September (IRIN) - So far this year, 20,000 illegal migrants have arrived in the Spanish Canary Islands from the West African coast in the hopes of eventually reaching mainland Spain. The Spanish Red Cross estimates that more than 1,000 migrants have drowned trying to reach the archipelago.  Despite the risks, many young West Africans, frustrated by the limited opportunities at home and tempted by the stories of those who have made it, continue to embark on the journey.   BANJUL, March 28 - Gambian police sealed off the offices of the tiny West African country's Independent newspaper and arrested its entire staff on Tuesday, a day after the paper printed two articles critical of President Yahya Jammeh. Most employees were released after questioning but Managing Director Madi Ceesay -- who is also president of the Gambia Press Union -- and Editor Musa Saidy Khan remained in detention on Tuesday afternoon, members of the newspaper's staff said. The arrests were a further sign of tension in the poor former British colony less than a week after the government said it had foiled a coup plot and launched a crackdown in which 28 people, including 15 army officers, have been arrested.
