Festival Banlieue Wake Up : Diamaguène Sicap Mbao à l'honneur pour sa 11e édition

To improve the image of the suburbs through culture.

The Banlieue Wake Up festival will take place from April 17 to 27, 2026, in Diamaguène Sicap Mbao, with a particularly rich and diverse program. This exceptional edition will be held under the patronage of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, marking a historic turning point for this event, which is deeply rooted in the Pikine department. According to artistic director Moussa Sow, the participation of the head of government and several high-ranking officials represents a major opportunity. He believes it is unprecedented to see authorities of this caliber present in Diamaguène Sicap Mbao, sending a strong message and opening new economic and political perspectives for the area.

The major new feature this year is the creation of a Festival Village, which will be the beating heart of the event. For one week, this central space will host all the activities, with a focus on exhibition stands. The aim is to showcase the expertise of local artisans and women artisans, while also facilitating strategic partnerships with development institutions. The ten-day celebration will include concerts and cultural evenings highlighting local heritage, while conferences and training workshops will strengthen the technical and creative skills of young people. A special focus will also be placed on the 2026 Youth Olympic Games to actively involve young people from the suburbs in the upcoming Games.

For the festival's promoter, Sha Heim Diop, the primary goal is to change the narrative surrounding the suburbs. He emphasizes that while crime is often discussed, it exists everywhere, and his objective is to showcase the positive aspects and talents of the community where he grew up. The artist Samba Peuzzi, one of the headliners, shares this vision of civic responsibility. He affirms that by representing an entire area, he has a duty to be a role model for the young people who follow him, having learned through experience that artists must serve social development. Since 2023, the festival has benefited from the support of the communications agency Shine and the Diamaguène Sicap Mbao town hall, reaffirming their shared commitment to making culture a true driver of socio-economic development.
