« Pas de Fopica, peur des représailles » : le parcours de Gabrielle Kane pour imposer «Debbo»
Gabrielle Kane marks her return to the spotlight as producer and performer of "Debbo," a television series focused on the condition of Senegalese women, their struggles, and their gray areas. "Debbo" is not a work of posturing, it is a work of truth. I drew on real stories, confidences from women I met, fragments of life that I myself have experienced or observed. In a context where Senegalese society is still debating the place and role of women, Debbo takes an honest, unpretentious look at what women experience," she explains to L'Observateur.
Her goal is to rehabilitate the image of Senegalese women, far from the television clichés: "I wanted people to stop reducing them to their appearance."
Produced without public support from FOPICA, the series was carried out "on its own two feet," despite personal sacrifices and administrative obstacles: "We received no funding from FOPICA. Our application remained a dead letter. Some partners backed out for fear of reprisals."
The filming, mostly in the suburbs, required complex logistics, but Gabrielle Kane remembers a powerful human adventure, particularly with director Abdoulahad Wone and actors Leye Guèye and Mame Mbaye. Selected at Fespaco, the series represents a consecration for her. "This recognition goes far beyond a prize, it validates hard work," exults the interviewee of the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.
