Mining in the South Pole region needs real reform and regularization, as it does everywhere else. The Minister of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines, Birame Souleye Diop, who chaired the mining sector's open house ceremony in Ziguinchor, painted a grim picture of the irregular exploitation of these resources in this southern region. According to the minister, major irregularities were noted during the audits initiated in the management of these resources.
"In the South Pole, out of 79 sites examined, we noted major irregularities: 68 clandestine sites without any form of authorization, issuance of documents by non-competent authorities, non-payment of royalties, exploitation outside the perimeter, absence of environmental and social impact studies, or even conflicts with communities," declared the minister, to illustrate the interest of the open days in the mining sector.
According to Birame Souleye Diop, these open days provide an opportunity to raise awareness about legal and administrative obligations. They also provide an opportunity to clearly explain the procedures for obtaining, renewing, and monitoring mining permits. They serve as a reminder that every operator, large or small, must submit complete and compliant applications, otherwise no permits will be issued.
The Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, Birame Souleye Diop, recalled on this occasion that, since August 2024, a specialized commission of more than twenty experts has been working to rigorously examine the files. However, for this work to have a real impact, Birame Souleye Diop affirms that "local operators and stakeholders must be able to know and respect the rules of the game."
