Le ‘’Projet’’ Vs ‘’l’incarnation’’ : Pr Moussa Diao analyse le discours d’un « président en quête d’espace politique »
Will the myth of the inseparable duo "Sonko and Diomaye" survive? That's the burning question on everyone's lips after reading the uncompromising analysis of Professor Moussa Diao, a guest on Sunday's "Objection" program on Sud FM. According to the political science professor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's extensive interview, in which he emphasized the primacy of the "Project" over individual personalities, was no accident. It reveals a deep rift at the highest levels of government that the two members of the tandem can no longer conceal.
According to Professor Diao, by arguing that "the project" cannot be built around "an excessive personification," the head of state is attempting a perilous maneuver: "dissociating the political party (PASTEF) from the tutelary figure of Ousmane Sonko." He considers this undertaking "wrongly," given that Senegalese political history—from Senghor to Sall, including Diouf and Wade—proves that "activists identify first with the charisma of a leader before committing to a program." "They cannot be separated," the academic insists, reminding everyone that Sonko remains the driving force behind mobilization and the source of the most sympathy among young people.
The political analyst highlights an institutional paradox. While Diomaye Faye holds the highest office, he seems to be encountering a "narrow political space." By advocating reforms that distance the President from the party's management, he risks, according to Moussa Diao, further isolating himself. Professor Diao describes a man seeking to "reclaim" an influence that is slipping away from him, in the face of a Prime Minister whose political room for maneuver remains intact and dominant.
Worse still, according to Moussa Diao, the unease goes beyond mere words. The removal of close associates of the President from certain positions of power within the party apparatus, the UGB professor argues, testifies to a real tension. The President finds himself in the position of a man seeking to "counter the actions" of an ally who has become too much of a liability on the political scene. The episode of the restructuring of the Diomaye-President coalition should be viewed from this perspective.
However, while Ousmane Sonko has "the wind in his sails" thanks to his hyper-presence, this duality at the top weakens the momentum of March 2024. Professor Diao concludes on a note of warning: the project of rupture, already shaken by economic and social realities, could suffer from these "tensions at the top".
