Un premier sommet Golfe-Afrique organisé en décembre à Abidjan
The first summit between the Gulf countries and the African continent is expected to take place in December in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between these two regions, according to a statement sent to AFP on Monday.
The first edition of the Gulf–Africa Strategic Partnership Initiative (GASPI) aims to "sustainably strengthen the relationship between the two regions and contribute to the emergence of a strategic Africa–Gulf corridor" in a "context of recomposition of global strategic and economic balances", according to its organizer, the firm Gravitas Sovereign & Strategic Advisory.
Scheduled for December 8-10, it is expected to bring together heads of state and government from around thirty African and Gulf countries, representatives of international financial institutions and the private sector.
The objective is to "revitalize economic partnerships and accelerate Gulf investments in key sectors of the African continent," including energy, transport and logistics, agriculture and agribusiness, mining, and telecommunications, according to the statement.
"This summit will have an important diplomatic component with very strong economic implications," Ansoumane Camara, the originator of this initiative, told AFP.
This former special advisor to former Guinean Prime Minister Ibrahima Kassory Fofana (2018-2021) is counting on partners such as the Ivorian government, the host country, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (Badea), and the American law firm Sidley Austin.
Trade between Africa and the Gulf countries more than doubled between 2016 and 2023, rising from $57.7 billion to $121 billion, according to a report by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).
Direct investments by the six oil monarchies on the continent have exceeded $100 billion over the last decade, and the United Arab Emirates is now Africa's fourth largest trading partner, behind China, the European Union, and the United States.
Moreover, the financial centers of Riyadh and Dubai are increasingly popular with African businesses, middle and upper classes - also representing a significant source of income for the continent via money transfers from the diaspora established in the Gulf.
This summit should be held every two years, alternately in Africa and the Gulf.
