BAMAKO – Sixty (60) Guinean nationals have been remanded in custody at the central prison in Bamako, Mali. According to information obtained by Africaguinee.com, these individuals are being prosecuted for forgery and use of forged documents, fraud, breach of trust, and criminal conspiracy.

They are believed to be involved in a vast West African migrant smuggling network, operating under the cover of the international sales company QNET-Ltd, based in Mali.

According to a source close to the case, 20 other defendants of different nationalities — Malian, Burkinabe, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leonean, Liberian, Beninese and Togolese — are also being prosecuted in the same case.

Hundreds of victims trapped and held captive

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, several hundred foreign nationals, victims of this network, were interviewed by Malian investigators.

Most of them claim to have been lured by false promises made by relatives, friends or acquaintances, before being held captive in guarded homes on the outskirts of Bamako, notably in Niamana, Yirimadjo, N'Tabacoro and Kalabancoro (Niamakurani sector).

These victims, mostly from Guinea, were grouped together in large buildings where they were fed and cared for if they were sick, but prevented from leaving.

A well-oiled extortion scheme

According to investigators, as soon as a victim arrived at the Place-Guinée bus station (Commune IV) or at the Sogoninko bus station (Commune VI), they were immediately taken to a closed location.

To regain his freedom, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of several million CFA francs, which the victim's family had to transfer from Guinea or abroad.

More than 200 Guineans released

In total, more than 400 people are believed to have been scammed by this network, including 200 Guineans recently rescued by the Malian Brigade for the Repression of Major Banditry and Organized Crime (BRBGCO).

These items were handed over to the Guinean embassy in Bamako.

Investigations are continuing to dismantle the entire network and identify any possible local and cross-border complicity.

To be continued…
