Coopération bilatérale entre un État de l’AES et un pays non-membre: La position tranchée du capitaine Traoré
In an interview given to the national and international press yesterday, Thursday, April 2nd, the President of Burkina Faso addressed a burning issue for many citizens of the ESA: cooperation between a member state and a non-member nation.
For the Burkinabe leader, each country in the ESA is free to form partnerships with whomever it wants, but this must not be at the expense of the Confederation.
"It requires sincerity first and foremost among us leaders."
“It’s true, it’s a Confederation. Each country can develop its bilateral relations and all that, but if it’s going to have an impact on the Confederation, we have to be able to rein it in. And that requires sincerity, first and foremost among us leaders, sincerity in our internal policies to prevent a Trojan horse from creeping into our organization through bilateral cooperation,” declared Captain Traoré. He acknowledged that it’s a current issue.
Consultations are underway to reach a very clear resolution that will prevent bilateral agreements from taking precedence over confederal agreements.
It should be remembered that Niger has warmed up its relations with Algeria in recent months, a country that maintains difficult relations with Mali.
