Cameroun : deux lycéens tués par la chute d’un arbre sur un camion à Niété

The bilingual high school in Niété, in the Ocean department of southern Cameroon, is in mourning after a brutal and unexpected accident. Two students lost their lives when a tree fell on a moving truck.

The victims were students in the first year of the Spanish A4 program. They were in the back of a large truck when a tree fell on the vehicle, leaving them no chance of survival. The tragedy occurred while they were helping with a move.

A move that turns into a disaster

According to initial reports from the local community, the two students were helping a neighbor transport his belongings. The truck was leaving village 14 for village 11, in the Niété district, when the accident occurred.

The driver and other occupants apparently didn't have time to avoid the tree. The fall took everyone by surprise. The two teenagers in the back of the truck were killed, while the vehicle sustained significant damage.

Two students separated from their family

The two victims have been identified as Samuel Djonga and Bocbedila. One was from the Maka'a community in eastern Cameroon, the other from the Toupouri community in the Far North.

Their bodies were taken to the morgue at Niété Central Hospital. In the town, there is deep sorrow, especially within the educational community. The tragedy has struck two young people who were continuing their studies and were expected to enter their final year of high school the following year.

Solidarity at the heart of the accident

What makes this story even more heartbreaking is the context. The two high school students weren't in the truck for a ride or a personal errand. They had stepped up to help a neighbor move, a simple act of solidarity that turned into a tragedy.

In many rural areas, it's common for young people to help with moving house or transporting goods. But this accident serves as a reminder of the often underestimated risks on certain roads, especially when vehicles are carrying both belongings and passengers.

An investigation into the circumstances is expected.

The exact circumstances of the tree's fall will need to be clarified. For the families and loved ones of the victims, the immediate priority is mourning. But questions remain about the condition of the road, the safety of the transport, and the conditions that made the accident possible.

In Niété, this tragedy has left a profound sadness. Two students left wanting to help. Their disappearance serves as a stark reminder, once again, of how a simple journey can become fatal when danger strikes without warning.
