More bad news for democracy in the ECOWAS region. On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the military seized power in Guinea-Bissau, simultaneously deposing the outgoing president, Umaro Sissoco Embalo. This coup, which clearly caught no one off guard, comes on the eve of the announcement of the results of the presidential election held on Sunday, November 23.
In a statement broadcast on national television and read by Brigadier General Dinis N'Tchama, the military outlined the reasons behind this coup.
Drug traffickers involved
“Deeply committed to the values of national security, civil peace, defense and territorial integrity, and the defense of Guinea-Bissau, the High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order has reacted to the discovery of an ongoing plan to destabilize our country,” Mr. N’Tchama stated, according to the Guinean News Agency (Agencia de Noticias da Guiné). He specified that local politicians and unknown drug traffickers are involved in this plot. Intelligence services have reportedly even discovered a “depot of weapons of war.”
While waiting to clarify the situation, the coup leaders announce the closure of all institutions of the Republic, the suspension of all media until further notice, the immediate suspension of the ongoing electoral process, the closure of national air, sea and land borders, and the imposition of a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
