Guinée: un groupe armé a été "neutralisé" à Conakry à quelques heures de la présidentielle
Guinean security forces "neutralized" members of an armed group with "subversive intentions threatening national security" on Saturday morning in the suburbs of Conakry, according to an official statement released hours before the presidential election scheduled for Sunday.
The statement makes no mention of the election, in which nine candidates are participating, including the head of the junta, General Mamadi Doumbouya. The election is intended to conclude the transition four years after the military seized power in September 2021 in this West African country, which has been governed for decades by dictatorial regimes.
On Saturday "at 04:00 a.m., based on reliable intelligence, the security services carried out a targeted intervention in a concession in the suburbs of Conakry where an armed group was present," according to the statement from the Operational Command Post for Internal Security (PCO-SI), a joint unit made up of police officers, soldiers, gendarmes and customs officers.
"This intervention made it possible to completely neutralize the group and to arrest the individuals involved after several exchanges of gunfire," the text states, without giving any further details.
A judicial investigation "is underway to identify all the ramifications of this case and establish responsibilities," the statement continued.
Residents reported to AFP on Saturday morning that gunfire had occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday in Sonfonia, a district located about fifteen kilometers from downtown Conakry.
They indicated that a mosque under construction and at least one house were targeted in these nighttime shootings which, according to the same sources, left bullet impacts on the facades and interior of the two buildings, and "traces of blood" in the neighborhood.
This incident comes on the eve of the presidential election in which the head of the junta, Doumbouya, is running, despite his initial promise not to run.
General Doumbouya's opponents are relatively unknown, as the main opposition figures have been excluded from the race.
The junta has restricted individual freedoms and banned protests since 2022. Many opponents have been arrested, tried or forced into exile.
Since its independence in 1958, Guinea has had a complex history, marked by military and authoritarian regimes. Despite its mineral wealth, more than half of its population lives below the poverty line, according to World Bank figures for 2024.

c'est tout simplement un haut gradé de l'armée qu'on a voulu arrêter sur la base de soupçons infondés. En bon militaire, il sait qu'il aura le même sort que le général Sadiba Koulibaly alors, il s'est dit que s'il faut mourir autant le faire avec honneur, en se défendant et donc il a refusé de se rendre, il y a eu bataille acharnée entre lui et les forces spéciales qui ont dû reculer. On l'a pas arrêté mais sa maison est actuellement encerclée . Il faut dire que le régime de Doumbia a basculé dans la paranoïa comme du temps de Sékou Touré. Au moindre soupçon seulement on t'arrête. Même le CEMGA le commandant Abdoulaye Keïta est actuellement sous résidence surveillée. Donc BERBERT, tu vois, je suis plus informé que ton AFP..
