Mali: des militaires "complices" arrêtés après les attaques du JNIM et du FLA
Authorities have arrested individuals suspected of complicity in planning joint attacks by JNIM and the FLA in Mali. Several military and political figures have been accused by the ruling military regime.
A week after the joint attacks carried out by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) in Mali, the military prosecutor announced investigations and arrests. On Friday, May 1st, Malian public television reported that "the investigations conducted have, at this stage, established a body of solid evidence relating to the complicity of certain members of the military."
Some soldiers, either discharged or facing discharge, are believed to have played a crucial role in planning, coordinating, and executing the attacks. Among the suspects are Sergeant Diakaridia Sodio, Warrant Officer Moussa Diané, Chief Warrant Officer Mamadou Keïta, and Sohiba Diarra, a retired soldier. Their photos are now circulating on social media, although it is still unknown who has been arrested.
A meeting with the jihadist group
The investigation is not limited to the military. Dr. Oumar Mariko, a former member of parliament and political opponent, is also under scrutiny by the Malian justice system. He recently admitted to meeting with representatives of JNIM in early April on Malian soil. According to him, this meeting was arranged to negotiate the release of prisoners and initiate a dialogue with the jihadist group.
Photos of four soldiers accused of plotting or participating in last weekend's attacks are circulating on social media: Sergeant Diakaridia Sodio, Warrant Officer Moussa Diané, Chief Warrant Officer Mamadou Keïta, and retired soldier Soïba Diarra. However, it is unknown which of the alleged perpetrators have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor stated in a press release.
(Re)read Attacks in Mali: "There is no evidence of a real Russian counter-offensive"
Mali faces a critical security situation and is gripped by uncertainty following unprecedented attacks by jihadists from JNIM, an Al-Qaeda ally, and the FLA rebellion against strategic positions held by the ruling military regime. Weakened, the Malian army and its Russian allies abandoned their positions at the strategic Tessalit camp on Friday, which is now under the control of armed groups.
