Renforcement de la résilience agricole au Sud : Les ICS se veulent plus proches des producteurs

The Chemical Industries of Senegal (ICS) program for supporting agriculture in the Kolda and Ziguinchor regions conducted an inspection of pilot areas focused on sustainable agricultural development and food sovereignty. Delegations from the ICS general management and agricultural research services and institutes of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock visited the rice plots of Kanamo-Entente de Diouloulou, in the Bignona department, and the maize and sorghum fields of producers in Médina Yoro Fouladou, Kolda region.

In Kolda, the trial plots are showing increased yields. These are rising from 3,588 kg/ha to approximately 4,000 kg/ha for maize, and for sorghum, an improvement from 1,750 kg/ha to 2,500 kg/ha is expected, according to explanations from the delegation led by the Director General of ICS.

In Ziguinchor, specifically in the department of Bignona where the rice was sown and tested, the observation shows crops in the maturity phase with optimal filling of the panicles, announcing a very promising harvest.

According to the Director General of ICS, Mama Sougoufara, these performances confirm the concrete impact of the program on the productivity and quality of crops, strengthening the market value of local productions and improving the purchasing power of farmers.

"What is important is really being able to contribute to Senegal's food sovereignty through high-performing agricultural cooperatives that are committed to the production and multiplication of certified seeds," said the Director General of ICS after his discussions with producers from the Diouloulou Agreement, specializing in rice production.

In terms of production, a significant increase in productivity is expected, rising from 2 tonnes to 3 tonnes for some, according to Mama Sougoufara.

Bassirou Coly, technical coordinator of the Diouloulou Agreement, welcomes this initiative of giving producers the opportunity to consider the necessary formula to identify the type of fertilizer appropriate for their soil in order to improve yields.
