Éducation au Sénégal : Il est temps de repenser le double emploi des enseignants ![PAR Ibrahima Dieng]
Senegal faces an educational paradox that we must discuss openly.
Senegalese law allows public school teachers to also work in private schools. In theory, this represents an opportunity to enhance their skills. In practice, however, this situation creates profound imbalances that weaken the public school system and exacerbate inequalities.
What we are seeing on the ground: Some teachers, despite being properly paid by the state, are devoting more energy and commitment to private schools than to public schools. Even more serious, there have been reported cases where teachers participate in public school strikes while continuing to teach in private schools.
Students in public schools, often from the most modest backgrounds, are the first victims of this situation.
A simple, fair, and effective solution: It's time to require private schools to recruit their own teachers, as is done in most other economic sectors in the country. Qualified human resources exist. Thousands of young education graduates are waiting for job opportunities.
This measure would allow us to:
- Create new jobs in the education sector
- Empower each teacher within their sector
- Improve the quality of education, both public and private
- Put an end to conflicts of interest that penalize our children
The private sector must assume its responsibilities regarding employment, instead of taking advantage at a lower cost of staff already trained and paid by the state.
Education is everyone's business. Our children deserve fully committed teachers, whether they are in a public or private school.
