CONCERT DU 31 DÉCEMBRE A THIÈS : Le maire Babacar Diop critiqué pour avoir "zappé" les artistes locaux
The New Year's Eve celebrations (December 31st) are a time when local authorities promote artists from their communities by organizing cultural events. In Thiès, several singers feel overlooked by Mayor Babacar Diop, who they say has forgotten them in favor of inviting artists from Dakar. This has been denounced by influencers on social media.
Pape Mbaye, a young singer from Thiès, believes that Mayor Babacar Diop made a big mistake by favoring Dakar artists at the expense of those from Thiès. "Babacar Diop is someone who loves the city of Thiès. He is doing an excellent job, but culture seems to be forgotten. Artists are almost neglected by the local authorities," he laments.
For the singer, the end-of-year festivities are an opportunity for mayors to promote local artists. He notes that this is apparently what all the mayors in the country do, except those of Thiès.
"Mayor Babacar Diop needs to understand that Thiès has young talents capable of putting on this show. There are many great artists from Thiès, like Dame Sène, Djeba, Sidy Kâ, Lama Ndiaye, and others, who are capable of performing at the end-of-year shows. He doesn't need to look elsewhere. This isn't the first time he's overlooked artists from Thiès. His attitude doesn't encourage local artists. That's why many young musicians have left Thiès to settle in Dakar. It's deplorable and it needs to be corrected. Singers are part of Thiès' cultural scene," he lamented.
Pape Mbaye, the new rising voice of Thiès
Born in 1996 in Thiès, Pape Mbaye is a very talented singer. Grandson of the legendary singer Ablaye Ndiaye "Cossan," he inherited his musical talent at a very young age. From his earliest years, he was immersed in a world of sounds and melodies. After obtaining his BFEM (Brevet de Fin d'Études Moyennes), he made a bold choice: to leave school and dedicate himself fully to his passion, music.
A risky gamble, but one that paid off. In 2019, Pape Mbaye achieved his first major success: a sold-out concert at Mickey Land, marking his official entry into the big leagues. Since then, the young singer has been forging his own path, between local venues, live performances, and cultural engagements. Slowly but surely, he is establishing himself as one of the most promising artists on the Thiès music scene.
Today, Pape Mbaye is actively preparing for the release of his first album, scheduled for 2026. A six-track project, which he promises will be rich, varied, and powerful, with a truly personal touch. Pape Mbaye represents the fusion of the legacy of a strong musical lineage and the freshness of a new generation.
