Alleged rapes: 18 years in prison requested for Tariq Ramadan
The Paris public prosecutor's office requested an 18-year prison sentence on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, for Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, accused of raping three women. The 63-year-old defendant failed to appear in court, prompting the criminal court to issue an arrest warrant for him.
Medical experts concluded that Tariq Ramadan, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was fit to appear in court. His lawyers denounced the proceedings as a "travesty of justice" and walked out of the courtroom.
The public prosecutor's office also requested that Tariq Ramadan be permanently banned from French territory once he has served his sentence. The trial, which began on March 2, is continuing despite the defendant's absence.
