Migration Sénégal–Mauritanie : Ousmane Sonko célèbre un accord « historique » et dénonce les barrières européennes

During a joint press conference with his Mauritanian counterpart, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko hailed a major step forward in managing migration between Senegal and Mauritania. According to the Senegalese head of government, the new agreements concluded between the two countries have allowed for the regularization of 28,000 Senegalese living in Mauritania, a dramatic increase compared to the 2,000 cases recorded previously.

Entering into force on July 1, 2025, this agreement is described as "historic" by the authorities in Dakar. For Ousmane Sonko, it symbolizes a significant improvement in bilateral cooperation and a concrete recognition of the rights of Senegalese migrants in their northern neighbor.

Between national sovereignty and restricted mobility

The Prime Minister, however, emphasized a fundamental principle: that each state remains sovereign in defining its rules regarding entry, residence, and settlement, including Senegal. He believes, however, that the global migration debate is currently too often biased against the African continent.

"The real question today is the number of Africans expelled from Europe and the number of visas refused each year. Even going and returning has become almost impossible, including for the elites," he stated firmly.

Beyond the figures, the head of government called for a more balanced understanding of migration dynamics. He emphasized that Africa should not be seen solely as a continent of emigration, but as a genuine space of human movement. A space that, unfortunately, is hampered by restrictive policies imposed from the outside.

Through this plea, Ousmane Sonko reaffirms Senegal's desire to prioritize mutually beneficial neighborhood solutions while also raising a critical voice on the international stage regarding movement restrictions imposed on Africans.
