Africa faces the trap of imported inflation

L’Afrique face au piège de l’inflation importée

Imported inflation continues to exert significant pressure on African economies. In 2025, food inflation averaged around 12% in sub-Saharan African countries, according to the FAO and the World Bank, with marked variations between countries. Energy prices also rose sharply in economies dependent on fuel imports, reflecting the volatility of international markets. This sensitivity is explained by the high share of imported goods in consumer baskets: in Senegal and Mali, nearly 40% of food products come from abroad, while a large share of energy, sometimes up to 60%, is purchased on international markets.

High logistical costs exacerbate these pressures. Maritime transport between Europe and West Africa is among the most expensive in the world, with rates often higher than those charged for Asia. Limited port infrastructure increases delivery times and costs, reducing the effectiveness of monetary policies, as even high interest rates do not always succeed in curbing import price increases.

Low-income households are the most vulnerable. In some urban areas, between 40% and 60% of family budgets are spent on food. Rising commodity prices reduce purchasing power and exacerbate inequality. Therefore, efforts to diversify agriculture and industry, along with strengthening transport and storage infrastructure, appear to be essential levers for reducing vulnerability to imported inflation and achieving long-term stability in domestic markets.
