Éducation : Le G7 relance la grève, le système éducatif menacé de paralysie
Walkouts, total strikes, and a national march: Senegalese schools are heading towards a new period of turbulence. The G7, the main education union, has announced a series of protests starting Tuesday, January 13, 2026, a dynamic that could paralyze the national education system after a 2024-2025 school year marked by relative calm.
The announcement was made this Monday, January 12, 2026 in Keur Massar, during a press conference of the Union of National Education Inspectors of Senegal (SIENS), a member of the G7.
Speaking to the press, union officials gave a harsh and uncompromising assessment of the implementation of the agreements signed with the State in 2018 and 2022.
A lull achieved at the cost of heavy sacrifices
For the G7, the stability of the previous school year cannot be interpreted as a lasting normalization. According to the unions, it resulted from the resilience and sense of responsibility of teachers, who made significant sacrifices to protect students and the school calendar despite the government's continued failure to meet its commitments.
This lull now appears fragile due to the lethargy of the agreement monitoring committee responsible for assessing their level of implementation and facilitating dialogue between stakeholders.
Multiple demands that are still unresolved
The G7 denounces a series of structural dysfunctions affecting the entire sector. Among the main demands are: the signing of decrees still pending; the correction of the remuneration system and pay equity; the recurring delays in the payment of salaries for contract teachers; the payment of examination allowances (BFM, baccalaureate, vocational and technical training); the end of tax surcharges on back pay and allowances; the lack of operating budgets for schools and institutions; the provision of training scholarships for student teachers; and the reform of the statutes governing education personnel and pensions.
The unions also condemn the exclusion of the G7 from the ministry's activities and the blocking of union dues, which they liken to an attempt to financially strangle the union movement.
An action plan that foreshadows major disruptions
Faced with what it describes as continuous delaying and a lack of political will, the G7 has decided to activate a second action plan.
Tuesday, January 13, 2026: walkout at 9 a.m. in all educational structures; Wednesday, January 14, 2026: total strike; Thursday, January 22, 2026: walkout at 9 a.m. followed by a national march in Thiès; Friday, January 23, 2026: another total strike.
2026, a school year under high tension
With this resurgence of union protests, the 2025-2026 school year is shaping up to be highly tense, raising the risk of a lasting disruption to teaching if no concrete response is provided by the authorities.
The G7 is calling on the government to open genuine negotiations without delay, arguing that teachers have reached the limit of concessions. Otherwise, the unions warn, the stability of the Senegalese education system can no longer be guaranteed.
