Marche nationale du G7 à Thiès : Des centaines d'enseignants en détresse dans les rues de la ville rebelle

As part of its second action plan, which begins this Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 9:00 AM with a work stoppage, the G7, a coalition of several education sector unions, is organizing a major national march today in Thiès, followed by a total strike paralyzing schools across the country on Friday, January 23. The teachers, who warn that the mobilization will continue until the full implementation of the signed commitments, denounce what they consider a "dilatory delay" in the signing of the decrees by the decision-making teachers.

They reject Minister Moustapha Guirassy's explanations regarding administrative delays and believe that the government has been dragging out the implementation of the agreements for nearly a year and refuses to reduce the social pact to a single demand. The teachers reaffirm their demands, which they consider urgent and non-negotiable. These include the immediate signing of decrees concerning the status of decision-makers, the effective implementation of the salary system, the elimination of over-taxation, and the completion of the universal degree-awarding system.

For the G7, these demands are no longer mere promises, but long-awaited commitments. Faced with what they consider a lack of concrete responses, the unions intend to maintain pressure until their grievances are met.

This new mobilization raises fears of significant disruption to the school calendar and places the authorities under the urgent need for genuine dialogue to avoid a prolonged crisis in the education sector. The unions affiliated with the G7 regret "the inaction in addressing teachers' concerns through the resolution of outstanding agreements signed in 2018 and 2022."

This situation, notoriously detrimental to the sector as a whole, is caused by the lethargy of the agreement monitoring committee, which is responsible for periodically reporting on the implementation of promises, providing timely reminders, and communicating effectively with all stakeholders. Consequently, at the start of this academic year, the G7 once again sounded the alarm before rolling out its first action plan, which has remained ineffective in terms of appropriate and reasonable responses from the authorities.
