Pollution plastique : 27 collèges sénégalaises à l’école de la responsabilité écologique
Through the “Apprentice Explorers” program, the Joliba Institute and Plastic Odyssey have introduced more than 1,500 students to the fight against plastic pollution, with the support of the Ministry of National Education and the French Embassy.
The fight against plastic pollution is now taking place in schools. At the closing ceremony of the "Apprentice Explorers" educational program, 27 schools and colleges, from Dakar to Saint-Louis, presented the results of months of work combining science, creativity, and civic engagement. Led by the Joliba Institute and Plastic Odyssey, with the support of the Ministry of National Education and the French Embassy, this project aims to raise environmental awareness among young people while equipping them with the tools to take concrete action.
"This experience allowed students to understand that plastic pollution is not inevitable, but a challenge that everyone can respond to with their ideas and solutions," explains Dr. Mariam Aidara Bâ, president of the Joliba Institute.
She commends the commitment of teachers and school administrators who have integrated the program into their classroom activities. According to her, this first phase is just the beginning: "Our ambition is to make 'Apprentice Explorers' a lasting catalyst for change and a model of environmental education for future generations."
For her part, Christine Fages, France's ambassador to Senegal, emphasizes the importance of environmental education: "The idea is to show young people that there is value in recycling plastic, both for their living environment and for the economy. Plastic can become a resource if it is used intelligently."
She noted that 1,500 middle school students benefited from the program, including 600 who visited the Plastic Odyssey factory, discovering the recycling and transformation of plastic into useful objects.
For Maïmouna Lèye Diakhaté, technical advisor at the Ministry of National Education, the project also has an educational and community dimension: "The trained students in turn become ambassadors for the environmental cause in their schools, their families and their neighborhoods."
Beyond the learning itself, this program illustrates a shared conviction: change begins with education. By training young people to protect their environment, Senegal is preparing a generation of conscious and responsible agents of sustainable development.
