Sédhiou : Le système scolaire paralysé par un mouvement d’humeur aux motivations multiples
A wave of unrest is sweeping through schools in the town of Sédhiou. This morning, the usual calm of the classrooms gave way to whistles and rallying cries. Groups of students attempted to force their classmates out of the school, bringing classes to a complete standstill in several high schools and middle schools across the town.
The situation on the ground is striking, as the cohesion in action does not reflect a unity of thought. When questioned, many students evacuated from their classrooms seemed perplexed.
For some of the strikers, the reason is purely educational. "We are just days away from the exams and we still don't have a physics teacher in some classes. It's an injustice compared to other students in the country," complains a final-year science student.
For others, less focused on academic demands, the objective is quite different. Just days before the official start of the holiday break, the desire to extend their vacation seems to be the main motivation. "It's tradition, we plan ahead to have more time with our families," confides a young middle school student, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Worse still, a significant number of students admit to having followed the movement simply out of group effect or fear of reprisals from the leaders without knowing exactly what they are demanding.
