Ziguinchor : le CROUS ferme le restaurant universitaire après une “Journée Sans Ticket” menée par des étudiants
The social climate continues to deteriorate at Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (UASZ). The Regional Center for University Social Services (CROUS/Z) announced on February 9, 2026, the closure of the university restaurant "until further notice," following a new incident involving a group of students.
According to a statement signed by Director Dr. Salif Baldé, students, despite an official warning issued earlier that morning, forced their way into the university restaurant at lunchtime to organize a "Ticket-Free Day" (JST). This action, according to the administration, severely disrupted the normal operation of the food service.
The CROUS/Z (Regional Center for Student Services/Z) reiterates that these actions jeopardize the ongoing material, financial, and human resources deployed to guarantee accessible and high-quality catering services for students. Management emphasizes that these disruptions weaken an already strained system designed to meet the social needs of the university community.
Faced with what it considers a failure to comply with the measures announced in a previous press release, and in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), the management of CROUS/Z has taken the decision to close the university restaurant until further notice.
In its message, the CROUS/Z appeals to students' sense of responsibility and their respect for the rules governing university social services. This closure, however, risks having a significant impact on students' daily lives, for whom the university restaurant is an essential component of social support.
This decision comes amid recurring tensions over student living conditions, particularly regarding catering, scholarships and university social services, which have been crystallizing discontent for several weeks on several campuses across the country.
It now remains to be seen what mediation measures will be taken to calm the situation and allow a return to normal service as soon as possible.
