Crue des fleuves Sénégal et Gambie : la vigilance renforcée à Matam et Podor

The Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE) published its latest hydrological bulletin on the evolution of water levels in the Senegal and Gambia rivers this Saturday, September 6, 2025. The morning readings show a mixed situation that calls for vigilance, particularly in certain sensitive areas.

On the Senegal River: Matam on alert, Podor on the rise

In Bakel and Kidira, water levels remain below critical thresholds, at 8.91 m and 6.39 m respectively, far from the alert levels set at 10 m.

In contrast, the situation is more worrying in Matam, where the river reached 8.13 m, exceeding the alert level of 13 cm. In Podor, the level reached 4.75 m, dangerously close to the critical threshold of 5 m. In Saint-Louis, the level remains under control at 1.15 m, or 60 cm below the alert level.

According to the DGPRE, the flood wave continues to spread downstream, increasing the risk of overflow in already fragile localities.

On the Gambia River: increases upstream, decreases downstream

The stations of Kédougou (6.19 m compared to 3.61 m yesterday) and Mako (3.96 m compared to 3.61 m) recorded significant increases, reflecting significant inflows from upstream. On the other hand, at Simenti (6.35 m) and Gouloumbou (7.08 m), the levels are slightly down and remain well below the respective alert levels (13 m and 12 m).

The DGPRE notes a contrasting dynamic on the Gambia River, which requires constant monitoring even if no exceedance of the alert level has yet been observed.

Recommendations and call for vigilance

In view of these developments, the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation is calling on local populations, particularly those in Matam, Podor and Saint-Louis, to maintain and strengthen the preventive measures already in force.

The DGPRE assures that it continues to closely monitor the hydrological situation and will continue to regularly inform the authorities and local communities.

J'ai l'impression de revivre le terrorisme par les annonces de crues comme en 2024.
