Senegal River: Rising water levels in Matam, Podor and Richard Toll

The level of the Senegal River continues to rise in Matam, Podor, and Richard Toll, a situation that heightens fears of flooding in the lower reaches of several areas of the valley.

The Saint-Louis and Matam water resources brigade, in its daily bulletin, announces an upward trend at the Matam hydrological station where the alert level of 8 m was exceeded by 21 cm.

"In Matam, the water level which was at a level of 8.20 m on September 1, 2025 at 8 a.m., is this morning at 8.21 m," informs the source, adding that "the level of the river at the Matam station, at the same period of the previous hydrological year (2023-2024), was established at 7.43 m.

At the Podor hydrological station, the water level rose from 4.53 m on September 1, 2025 at 8 a.m. to 4.60 m today. "The trend is towards a rise of 7 cm. Last year (2023-2024) over the same period, the water level was 4.33 m at the station, whose alert level is 5 m."

Richard Toll, whose alert level is 3.35 m, is also seeing a rising trend of 2 cm, according to the document which notes that "the water level which was at a level of 2.80 m on September 1, 2025 at 8 a.m. rose this morning to a level of 2.82 m compared to 2.82 m in 2024."

On September 2, 2025 at 8 a.m., the level of the Senegal River at Saint-Louis is at 1.11 m on the scale compared to 1.19 m in 2024 at the same time, we read on the document.

Furthermore, according to the water resources brigade of Saint-Louis and Matam, on the Falémé, at the Kidira station, a rising trend of 13 cm is noted today with "a water level which went from 7.93 m on September 1, 2025 at 8 a.m. to a level of 8.06 m, compared to 6.09 m in 2024."

On the Bakoye, at the Oualia station, however, the trend is downward by 46 cm. "The water level at the level of 5.42 m on September 1, 2025 at 8 a.m. is this morning at the level of 4.96 m, compared to 4.97 m in 2024 last year."

In Bakel, there is also a downward trend of 3 cm recorded around the body of water which was at a level of 9.49 m on September 1, 2025 and which this morning stands at 9.46 m, compared to 7.63 m in 2024.

Let us recall that at the Bakel station, the alert level is 10 m. Faced with this situation, the administrative and territorial authorities as well as the State's technical services have mobilized to take the required anticipatory due diligence in terms of awareness, prevention, security and intervention, urging the population to protect themselves from these risks and to secure their property.
