Pays-Bas : le chef de la diplomatie démissionne, faute de nouvelles sanctions contre Israël
Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned Friday evening after a fruitless debate on possible sanctions against Israel at a cabinet meeting, the ANP news agency reported.
"I find that I am not in a position to take any significant additional steps" to pressure Israel, he said.
Mr. Veldkamp indicated on Thursday that he wanted to take additional measures against Israel, after declaring far-right Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich "persona non grata" in July.
The Netherlands was also among 21 countries that signed a joint statement Thursday calling Israel's approval of a major settlement project in the West Bank "unacceptable and contrary to international law."
The Dutch minister said the measures he proposed had been "seriously discussed" but had met with resistance at several cabinet meetings.
Mr. Veldkamp, who had already resigned since the fall of the government on June 3, then decided to step down, believing that he did not have "sufficient confidence in his ability to act as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the weeks, months and year to come."
The UN officially declared famine in Gaza on Friday, after its experts warned that 500,000 people were in a "catastrophic" condition, clearly attributing responsibility for the famine to Israel.
