A group, including the young man, had come squirrel hunting in this rural area near Iowa City. While they were walking, the high school student was hit in the back of the head by a bullet fired by another hunter. He was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.
An investigation is underway
The victim sadly died later that day from his injuries, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a statement released Monday. According to initial reports, the teenager was "mistaken for a squirrel by another member of his hunting party."
The young man's high school has since paid tribute to him on social media. "Our hearts are broken," said members of his sports team. Police have opened an investigation. An online fundraiser launched in support of his family had already raised more than $50,000 as of Wednesday.
