Longues détentions : Yacine Fall préconise une alternative, en visite à la prison de Liberté 6
The Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, visited the Liberté 6 women's prison on Tuesday and addressed major concerns, including the issue of lengthy detentions and the prospects for alternatives to incarceration. Yassine Fall shared a "ndogou" (the breaking of the fast) with the inmates of the prison.
Addressing the inmates, the minister emphasized that "deprivation of liberty must never mean loss of dignity." "As women, public officials, but above all as sisters or mothers, you are not forgotten," she declared.
She stressed the need for a justice system that is both firm and humane, capable not only of punishing, but also of supporting, repairing, and opening up real prospects for reintegration.
According to her, the Ministry of Justice attaches particular importance to improving detention conditions and effectively preparing for reintegration into social life, through education and vocational training programs.
Eight women detained awaiting trial for three years
The director of the Liberté 6 detention center, Inspector Khadidjatou Ndoye, welcomed the symbolic significance of this visit during the month of Ramadan. However, she emphasized a persistent concern: lengthy periods of pretrial detention.
"There are eight detainees who have been here for three years and have not yet been tried," she argued, calling for more diligent processing of the cases.
While efforts have been made, she believes that further progress is still needed, particularly in the area of sentence adjustment.
In response, Yassine Fall announced that a seminar dedicated to alternatives to incarceration would be held after Ramadan. The aim is to bring together all stakeholders in the justice system to identify sustainable solutions, both for those already incarcerated and for those at risk of being imprisoned.
"It's about seeing all the alternatives that the law offers in order to make better use of them," she explained, mentioning in particular parole, sentence reduction or electronic tagging.
Alongside the meeting, a panel led by lawyer Aïda Coundoul Tine, from the Directorate of Criminal Affairs and Pardons, provided information to the residents on the conditions for accessing parole and sentence adjustment measures.
