Affrontements à l’UCAD : le Général Birame Diop appelle au dialogue et au respect des droits
Following this press briefing, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Birame Diop, addressed the nation regarding the role of the defense and security forces in the context of the tensions observed at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar on Monday, February 9th. He began by expressing the perception of the forces deployed on the ground in light of the recent events. "I can assure you that the security forces are the first to be saddened and deeply affected when, during their operations, there are injuries or loss of life," he stated.
The minister indicated that law enforcement agencies are constantly striving to ensure the safety of operations and to act with the necessary humanity in carrying out their missions. He specified that the authorities of the Republic, on behalf of the Senegalese people, extend their congratulations and thanks to the defense and security forces for their service to the nation. He added that these authorities encourage them to continue their efforts toward excellence.
General Birame Diop reiterated that the State will continue to support the security forces, while ensuring they act professionally and responsibly, respecting the principles of proportionality and citizens' rights. He addressed the situation in universities and acknowledged the significant challenges that remain in this sector.
The minister stressed the need to create the conditions for open, sincere, constructive, and respectful dialogue. "It is therefore important that all stakeholders listen to and speak with one another, always prioritizing the best interests of Senegal," he stated. He recalled that Senegal was built as a country of dialogue, solidarity, and consultation, and that it must preserve this legacy to maintain stability and peace.
Finally, Birame Diop spoke of national unity and collective responsibility towards future generations. "Senegal is a family within which members, despite their differences, despite their antagonisms, have always been able to transcend them in order to continue living in harmony," he stated, before calling for the preservation of this heritage and its transmission under good conditions.
