Epidemics in Senegal: Update on Rift Valley fever and the Mpox virus

Épidémies au Sénégal : Le point sur la fièvre de la vallée du Rift et le virus Mpox

The Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has published an update on the evolution of the Rift Valley Fever (RVF) and Mpox epidemics, calling for increased vigilance and strengthened community mobilization.

Rift Valley fever: 416 confirmed cases, 30 deaths

As of November 8, 2025, Senegal recorded 3 new positive cases and one additional death related to Rift Valley fever (RVF). Since the start of the epidemic, the country has recorded a total of 416 confirmed cases, including 30 deaths and 362 recoveries.

Geographical distribution of cases

- Saint-Louis region: 318 cases, mainly in the districts of Richard-Toll (146), Saint-Louis (76), Podor (50) and Dagana (35)

- Fatick region: 19 cases, distributed between Diofior, Fatick, Passy, Foundiougne, Diakhao, Gossas

- Matam region: 28 cases, notably in Thilogne, Matam, Ranérou, Kanel, Pété

- Louga region: 19 cases, concentrated in Linguère, Dahra, Sakal, Keur Momar Sarr

- Kaolack region: 14 cases, including 11 in Kaolack, 2 in Ndoffane and 1 in Nioro

- Dakar region: 10 cases, located in Keur Massar, Sangalkam and Guédiawaye

- Regions of Thiès, Tambacounda, Kédougou and Kaffrine: sporadic cases (between 1 and 3 cases per region)

Mpox: 7 confirmed cases, all recovered

Since the first case was detected on August 22, 2025, seven confirmed and two probable cases of Mpox virus have been identified, all in the Dakar region. No deaths have been recorded, and all patients have now recovered. To date, 14 contacts remain under surveillance.

A call for vigilance and solidarity

The ministry urges the public to:

- Strictly adhere to the prevention measures

- Report any suspicious symptoms

- Actively collaborate with health workers and community liaisons

    Mais est-ce qu'on s'est posé une question sur l'identification du patient 0 (zéro), le premier porteur et de comment la maladie a débuté à Matam sans signalisation dans les pays frontaliers de la région (Mauritanie et Mali). Cette situation d'infestation, d'installation et de propagation de cette maladie m'inquiète bcp et doit nécessité une étude approfondie pour une gestion future de ce mode d'infection. A bon entendeurs ...
