Groupes à haut risque : Safiatou Thiam brise les tabous sur la transmission du VIH
The Pape Cheikh Diallo case and others have reignited the debate surrounding HIV transmission. Faced with the resurgence of discussions on modes of transmission in Senegal, Dr. Safiétou Thiam provided rigorous scientific insights on iTV. The executive director of the National AIDS Control Council (CNLS) reiterated that while the virus circulates little in the general population, it remains concentrated in so-called "high-risk" groups.
"In Dakar, the prevalence among men who have sex with men exceeds 27%, compared to less than 0.5% nationally," she revealed on the set of "Jury du dimanche".
According to her, this vulnerability is exacerbated by marginalization which pushes these communities into clandestinity, distancing them from prevention and care systems.
Dr. Thiam also raised an exceptionally serious point: the vulnerability of minors. She denounced cases of children abused as young as 7 or 8 years old, often within the family circle or in care facilities. "These children are victims, first and foremost. They are initiated by relatives in whom society has confidence," she emphasized.
Finally, she reiterated the principle of TasP (Treatment as Prevention): a person on effective treatment, whose viral load is undetectable, no longer transmits the virus. This scientific truth, she believes, should transform society's view of those who are ill.
