Apparition de criquets dans des zones horticoles : Les producteurs du Walo alertent
Following reports of desert locusts in several major horticultural areas of Walo, in the northwest of the country, producers in the industrial tomato sector, which extends from Saint-Louis to Aéré Lao, have issued an alert to the authorities.
The insects have been observed particularly in Bokol, Gaya, Fanaye, and near Pont-Gendarme, causing considerable concern among farmers. According to initial observations, the damage recorded so far is limited. In Gaya, some squash and onion crops have been slightly affected.
However, industry stakeholders fear a rapid spread of the swarms, which could have serious consequences for the current agricultural season. Abdoulaye Dieng, president of the National Consultation Committee on the Industrial Tomato Sector, expressed the producers' concerns. He noted that many farmers have taken out loans from financial institutions such as LBA, CMS, and UMSEC. He emphasized that the potential destruction of their crops would expose these producers to significant financial hardship.
The industrial tomato sector remains scarred by previous crises linked to locust invasions, which severely impacted the rural economy of the area. It is in this context that stakeholders are calling for preventative measures to avoid a similar situation.
In response to this alert, the Director of Plant Protection (DPV), Dr. Kémo Badji, confirmed the presence of locusts and the damage they had caused to the fields. He assured, however, that monitoring and control measures were already in place to contain the spread of the swarms and protect the horticultural areas.
For their part, the producers are calling for a rapid and concerted intervention between the DPV and the SAED, with the aim of controlling the threat before it takes on a scale that could weaken the entire tomato sector in Walo.
