Dakar : Un commerçant arrêté par la SR avec 21 téléphones iPhone volés destinés à la Gambie
The Dakar Research Section (SR) has arrested a suspected cell phone thief named O. Ndiaye. Born in 1998, this merchant based in Colobane was taken into custody last Thursday at the SR's premises for the theft of 21 iPhones.
His arrest was the result of a tip-off that a suspicious box had been sent on a scheduled bus to Gambia, according to Seneweb sources close to the prosecutor's office. The SR deployed a team to the bus's departure point around noon. The suspect, flagged down by the intelligence officer, arrived with his package, which he handed to the bus manager, along with the recipient's initials and phone number. He was immediately arrested by plainclothes police.
A damning discovery
Opening the package in the suspect's presence revealed an impressive haul: 21 iPhones of various models. When questioned about the origin of these devices, O. Ndiaye claimed to have purchased them in Colobane without being able to identify the sellers.
Using IMEI numbers and mobile phone carriers, the owners of the phones were identified and summoned to the Colobane investigation unit. Their testimonies confirmed that the devices had indeed been stolen by snatching or pickpocketing. Complainants continued to come forward as the investigation progressed.
Unable to lead investigators to his dealers or receivers, O. Ndiaye was brought before the Dakar High Court on Monday, September 29, for theft.
This arrest highlights an increasingly worrying phenomenon: the mass theft of iPhones in Dakar and their trafficking, most often to Gambia, Mali, Guinea, and Morocco. Every day, many Dakar residents are victims of these thefts, which fuel organized networks of receiving stolen goods and cross-border trafficking.
Given the scale of this scourge, it is urgent that public authorities encourage and increase operations to dismantle these criminal networks. Collaboration between intelligence services and intervention units such as research sections is crucial to stem this phenomenon.
