Médicaments — souveraineté pharmaceutique au Sénégal
Senegal is determined to achieve pharmaceutical sovereignty. But while working toward that goal, it must address a major challenge concerning drug imports. According to Minister Serigne Guèye Diop, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 38th General Assembly of the West African College of Pharmacists on Tuesday, Dakar imports 40% of its medicines through Europe, particularly France. However, Europe is no longer a major producer. This means Senegal relies on an indirect import system via France, which penalizes the country.
"I believe this system must also be stopped. We are discussing it with the Minister. Why must we, to import our medicines, go through third countries, through purchasing groups, instead of organizing ourselves as a pharmaceutical group to import directly from India, the United States, and the rest of the world? I think this is something we need to review. It is unacceptable," he stated.
