Parcelles-Assainies : Il simule le cambriolage de sa propre boutique pour masquer le vol d'une tontine Tabaski
The Parcelles-Assainies district police station brought MT Sèye, a shopkeeper, before the Dakar prosecutor's office on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Charged with embezzlement, the accused had broken the locks on his own shop to stage a robbery and explain the disappearance of money from the rotating savings and credit association (tontine) he managed. The case concerns a tontine organized by MT Sèye, a shopkeeper residing in Unit 11 of Parcelles-Assainies.
Trustingly, a group composed mainly of women had entrusted him with a total of 1,521,000 CFA francs over several months. This money was to be returned before the 2026 Tabaski festival to allow the members to cover family expenses, according to Seneweb sources close to the prosecutor's office.
The scam began to take shape on May 4, 2026. On that date, the shopkeeper urgently contacted the members of the tontine (a type of savings club) to break some terrible news: his store had been broken into during the night. According to him, the burglars had made off with the entire cash register, amounting to the tontine's 1.5 million francs. At his shop, the scene seemed to perfectly support his story: the shop's padlocks were found broken on the floor, and the security shutter was half-raised, suggesting a clear break-in. Refusing to give up and suspecting many unanswered questions, the victims formed a group. They decided to take legal action and filed a formal complaint against the manager at the Parcelles-Assainies district police station.
Summoned and questioned by investigators, MT Sèye initially tried to maintain his version of events and reiterated his statements about the alleged burglary. However, the professionalism of the police officers quickly turned the investigation around. Confronted with the glaring inconsistencies in his story and pressed by the commissioner's men, the shopkeeper finally broke down during his interrogation.
MT Sèye then made a full confession, admitting that he had fabricated the entire story. He himself had, under cover of night, broken the locks and forced open the metal shutter of his own shop to stage a burglary and throw investigators off the scent. As for the women's money, he confessed to having squandered it all for personal gain.
At the end of his custody, the trader from Unit 11, who unsuccessfully asked for clemency from the investigators, was presented this Tuesday, May 19, 2026, to the public prosecutor at the High Court of Dakar.
