Salaires et système de rémunération : Les précisions de Sonko sur la réforme
Teachers' unions, on strike for several weeks, are also demanding a reform of the Senegalese civil service pay system. This is intended, in particular, to correct salary disparities. However, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko does not want to rush things.
“In two years, we have fulfilled more than half of the commitments. And you tell us right away and now (…) This remuneration system, it will have to be overhauled and changed. And we will do it. We are working on it. But, for something so fundamental, affecting almost 200,000 civil servants, to tell me that this reform must be done in six months, I say no. We will take the time,” he asserted.
The head of government, speaking on the sidelines of the anniversary of his party's teachers' movement, clarified that the committees in charge of the issue are currently working on it. He recalled that a draft had been prepared on the matter around 2014. The file had been shelved and is no longer relevant, but it serves as a basis for further work, he said.
As for the committee currently being established, it has been housed within the Ministry of Finance. "It will deliver its conclusions, and we will do what needs to be done for a fairer, more equitable compensation system. Justice and fairness do not mean that everyone will receive exactly the same thing. That doesn't exist anywhere in the world. Even the Lord doesn't give the same thing to everyone. Yet, he could," he stated.
What the Prime Minister wants is a system with much more justifiable differences, a fairer system, to value each profession. In his view, the goal is for teachers to be motivated to remain teachers, "because it's a profession just as important as being a tax inspector or a treasury inspector."
