Tataguine : huit villages enfin raccordés à l’électricité

Residents of several villages in the Tataguine district can now breathe a sigh of relief. Eight localities have just been connected to the electricity grid thanks to a strategic partnership between Senegal and the United States.

The Director General of Senelec, Papa Toby Gaye, officially inaugurated the electricity network in these localities of the Fatick department. Among the beneficiaries are the villages of Nakhamay, Bacobof, Mbassis, Pethie Makha, Ngayacop, and Bacamak.

An investment of 300 billion FCFA

This electrification is the result of bilateral cooperation aimed at strengthening and modernizing the national electricity system. The United States Ambassador to Senegal emphasized the project's social impact: "This project aims to enable Senegal's electricity system to develop. It has also allowed many young Senegalese to receive training and access employment." She specified that this comprehensive program represents an estimated investment of over 300 billion CFA francs.

The initiative is part of the vast WELDY LAMONT program, which aims to electrify more than five hundred villages across the country. For the Tataguine district alone, one billion CFA francs will be allocated, according to the Director General of Senelec. "Electricity is a right for all, and the President of the Republic has made it a priority," Papa Toby Gaye reiterated, in the presence of the sub-prefect of Tataguine, Ndèye Sophie Sène.

Improvement of the local economy and security

Despite the residents' joy, some complaints were voiced, particularly regarding the dilapidated state of some of the streetlights. The Director General reassured the public: "The poles will be repaired within a few days," he promised.

For Mayor Ibou Ndiaye, these projects mark a turning point for the municipality. He believes they will significantly improve the residents' quality of life, facilitate local economic activities, and effectively contribute to reducing insecurity in these villages that were once plunged into darkness.
