Alpha D., a voluntary deputy police officer who deserted for ten days, was arrested in Thiaroye with his accomplice Cheikh Tidiane D. for attempted extortion of a 17-year-old shopkeeper.
On August 16, L'Observateur reports, falsely presenting himself as an agent on a mission, Alpha tried to extract 150,000 CFA francs from the young trader, under the pretext of illegally selling cigarettes: "If you don't pay 150,000 CFA francs right away, I'll take you to the police station. There, you'll pay even more, in addition to spending the night in a cell."
When the shopkeeper refused, Alpha showed off a fake gun to intimidate him, explaining: "I don't have an official card yet."
His accomplice, speaking Fulani, urged the victim to comply. But the duo was quickly caught by a neighbor, a prison officer.
The investigation revealed that Alpha had neither authorization nor professional card. The suspect admitted to brandishing a fake pistol, but claimed it was "just to scare people," justifying his desertion by saying it was a family funeral. His accomplice, Cheikh Tidiane D., stated that he "only accompanied" his friend and advised him to "let it go."
Despite their attempts to defend themselves, the testimony proved damning. The prosecutor called it a "plan hatched to extort money," and requested a two-year prison sentence. The Pikine-Guédiawaye court found Alpha D. guilty of extortion and impersonation, and reclassified the charges against Cheikh Tidiane D. as complicity. The two men were sentenced to two years in prison, three of which were suspended, the daily newspaper of Groupe Futur Médias added.
