Coupe du monde 2026 : énorme coup dur pour les Pays-Bas
The Netherlands national team will have to do without one of its key defenders for the 2026 World Cup. Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has officially withdrawn after undergoing back surgery.
Having been sidelined for several months, the 26-year-old player had been trying to avoid surgery in order to return to competition quickly. But faced with the persistent pain, Manchester United announced on Friday that an operation had become unavoidable.
In a statement, Manchester United confirmed that the Dutch defender had undergone successful surgery following a lengthy rehabilitation process. The club also highlighted De Ligt's excellent start to the season, having been an undisputed starter in the Premier League until the end of November, to the point of being voted Player of the Month by the fans.
For his part, the Dutch defender did not hide his disappointment. On Instagram, Matthijs de Ligt explained that he had tried everything to return to the highest level before resigning himself to the operation.
“After six months of treatment and relentless effort to return to the highest level, surgery was the only option. I’m obviously disappointed not to have been able to help the team these past few months and especially to miss the World Cup,” the Dutch international admitted. The Netherlands coach, who has yet to announce his squad, will have to make some tough decisions regarding his defense.
