C1: Mbappé sur Prestianni: "ce gars ne mérite pas de jouer la Ligue des champions"
Real Madrid star striker Kylian Mbappé defended his teammate Vinicius Jr on Tuesday night, saying that Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, accused of calling the Brazilian a "monkey" during the first leg of the Champions League playoffs, did not "deserve" to play in "the best" European competition.
"We cannot accept that a player who participates in the best football competition in Europe behaves like this. In my opinion, he no longer deserves to have this chance. (...) UEFA is trying to get things moving, but this is a serious case and I hope that decisions will be made, calmly," Mbappé said in the mixed zone in Lisbon.
"We must be examples for all the children who watch us. When I was little, I dreamed of playing in this competition in front of my TV. This kind of thing cannot happen. The whole world is watching us, including many children," he reminded.
The French striker also offered his support to his teammate on X: "Dance, Vini, and never stop, please. They will never tell us what we should or shouldn't do."
After opening the scoring with a superb right-footed strike (50th minute), Vinicius taunted the crowd at the Estádio da Luz, sparking a discussion with several Benfica players which earned him a warning from French referee François Letexier.
As the match seemed about to resume, the Brazilian ran towards the referee pointing at Prestianni, seemingly telling the referee that he had been called a monkey (mono, in Spanish) by the Argentine international.
Mr. Letexier then interrupted the game for almost ten minutes by activating the protocol put in place by UEFA in the event of a racist incident, before deciding to resume it without further sanction.
