February 6, 2022, will forever be etched in the history of Senegalese football. That day, in Yaoundé, the Lions of Teranga lifted the African Cup of Nations for the first time after beating Egypt on penalties (0-0, 4-3). This historic victory ushered in a golden era for Senegal, marked by an unprecedented sweep of all continental national team competitions.
In the space of a few months, Senegal would rack up a string of successes. After the senior team, the local Lions won the CHAN 2023 in Algeria against the host country (0-0, 5 pens 4). A month later, the U20 team, led by Lamine Camara, won the continental trophy in Egypt by dominating Gambia (2-0). In the process, the U17 team completed this historic haul by beating Morocco in the final (2-1). Never before had an African nation imposed such domination in all categories.
But three years later, that era of glory is now a thing of the past. Sadio Mané's Lions, the reigning champions, lost their crown to Côte d'Ivoire in the round of 16 (1-1, 4-5 on penalties). The other national teams followed suit, failing to retain their trophies. The latest symbol of this decline: the elimination of the local Lions on Tuesday in the semi-finals of the CHAN 2024 by Morocco.
Only the beach soccer team, a discipline where Senegal reigns supreme, continues to hold the continental torch. Even if Senegalese football is doing rather well, these successive failures must be analyzed without pleasure in order to quickly find a solution to the problem.
The end of this prosperous period now requires reconstruction. With the 2025 AFCON scheduled for Morocco in December, the Lions will have the opportunity to open a new chapter and put Senegal back at the top of African football.

Ah bon?
